A 40-acre waterfront area with rides and entertainment for the whole family.

Many visitors to Space Center Houston will afterward go out for seafood at nearby Kemah, which is as touristy as the Houston area gets. It used to be a rustic shrimping port on Galveston Bay where you could buy some shrimp and a beer and sit by the dock on an afternoon to watch the shrimp boats come in. Most of the pier was washed away in 1984 by a hurricane, and in the 1990s it was bought by a developer who built the boardwalk, several restaurants, a hotel, and some touristy stores and attractions. The restaurants overlook the water; if you stroll down the boardwalk you'll pass every one. Pick the one that most appeals to you. Among the attractions is a 50,000-gallon, floor-to-ceiling aquarium housing more than 100 species of tropical fish in the Aquarium Restaurant.

Visit Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah Boardwalk, a newly redeveloped waterside town that's home to several seafood restaurants, as well as a Coney Island-style theme park with a Ferris wheel and mini train. The most popular spot is the Aquarium, which sports a visually amazing three-story cylindrical fish tank in the center, not to mention several wall units. If you can't stand the wait, though, go for a nostalgic trip to the Jimmy Walker Room, the upscale upstairs dining room of Landry's, which also has the best deck view of boats on Galveston Bay.

Herman Park: The Kemah boardwalk located...

The Kemah boardwalk located about 20 minutes away from downtown is lovely place to spend time. Known for it's beautiful sunsets and seafood, this place packs up a lively atmosphere with a ferris wheel for the kids along with several other rides. Other will enjoy walking along the boardwalk, looking at the boats in the marina. You can also take a boat trip for around $7. You will also find various live entertainment. Whenever I visit, there is always a live band and an artist that performs juggling stunts with a twist of fire and blades. I highly recommend this place to everyone. Plus parking is free!!!

For the Kids

A new addition to the Boardwalk is the amusement park. Children love riding on the Ferris wheel, going round and round on the carousel or taking a ride on the gas-powered train that circles the entire Boardwalk. Do the kids need to get rid of some of that energy before they sit down to eat? Let them run through the "dancing fountains." Random sprays of water coming from the ground can reach up to 12 feet and will have your children screaming with delight. A definite favorite with the kids!

Kemah's Neighbor
Galveston, Texas, is only a 15-minute trip up the road and a perfect day trip if you're staying on the Boardwalk. If you're ready to hit the beach consider the family-oriented Stewart Beach or try an activity away from the water. The Strand is home to specialty stores selling everything from art to ocean knick-knacks, and quaint restaurants and cafes. Moody Gardens is 156 acres of fun! Children love walking through the Rainforest Pyramid and checking out plants from all around the globe. The Discovery Pyramid offers a galactic experience with space exhibits, and the IMAX Theater's six-story screen will delight kids and adults.

Whether it's a day trip or a weeklong excursion, you won't have a dull moment when you stroll the Kemah Boardwalk!

The Kemah Boardwalk on Galveston Bay has become one of the area's biggest attractions. Less than 40 minutes from south of downtown, the Boardwalk and surrounding aea have an entertaining mix of restaurants, shops, hotels and amusement rides. It's a great place to spend an afternoon or evening enjoying the waterfont sights and sounds, browsing in the shops, and satisfying your appetite for seafood.

Take Time for Fun in Texas: Stroll the Kemah Boardwalk! By Donna Smith

Imagine walking along a wooden pier nestled by the water's edge, drinking a delicious frozen drink. Smells of fried seafood and the ocean waft through the air as you watch the kids play carnival games, stopping occasionally to throw the seagulls a treat. As you make your way up the boardwalk towards the amusement park, you pause to let the train pass, waving to the passengers as they go by. Maybe now you'll head up to the stores and browse a while or let the kids get wet in the fountains. Or maybe you'll sit down at one of the tables on the water's edge and eat a delicious meal while the kids play on the playground equipment. You can do all of this, and more, at the Kemah Boardwalk, located only 20 miles from the hustle and bustle of downtown Houston, Texas.

Kemah Today

Years ago, people from all over would make the drive to the small seaside town to eat. A few restaurants lined the water. People would eat dinner, maybe stop and throw the ducks a few pieces of bread or crackers they took from the restaurant, then make their way home. In the late 1990s, The Landry Group, based in Houston, Texas, renovated the Boardwalk and turned it into the spectacular place it is today. A family can spend the entire day in Kemah – there's something for everyone!
